I’ve been meaning to try this place for awhile now, so imagine my excitement when the husband said he wanted to eat here for Friday lunch.
They open at 12 noon on Fridays and we were the only ones there. Susi our server said people usually come in around 2PM on Fridays but to be honest I didn’t mind it at all that we were the only ones there
As soon as we came in they escorted us to the kid’s play area which was a great surprise!!! (First impression: 5 stars!!!) We ordered in peace while the boys played in their own area. I loved the quiet time alone with my iPhone husband that I didn’t even pull out my big ball of yarn 😜
Here’s what we ordered:
Now, normally I’m a water only please type of girl but the drinks menu looked soooooo good that I thought to myself “Hey! Maybe, it’s worth it!”I’m sorry to say this but it wasn’t.
From left to right: Cha Nom Yen: Street Styled Thai iced tea with milk 😃; Oriental Fuse: Iced Jasmine green tea with mint leaves😕; Nana: Honeydew, cucumber, and mint😕
A staple order for my husband: Cream of Tom Yum with Seafood
Best dish of the day: Yum Talay Krob: Crispy seafood salad with celery, onion, and tomatoes in a spicy Thai dressing
Left to right:Guay Tiew Gai Ruam:Crispy batter-fried chicken and red roasted chicken, and your choice of noodles; Bamee Poo Nim Tod:Crispy fried soft shell crab served on a bed of egg noodles (picture grabbed from Little Bangkok website);Guay Tiew Ped Yang: Crispy-skin roasted duck and aromatic gravy, with your choice of noodles
I was having a ramen craving and I guess the boys got it too because we all ordered noodles with different toppings. You get the noodles dry with the toppings on top and a separate bowl for the broth along with that an array of condiments to suit your taste. So in other words I guess it’s like a make your own noodle bowl mix kinda thing. Which I loved but I have to say the boys didn’t appreciate, My six year old who had the chicken, ate the chicken and asked for white rice and left the noodles alone. My husband ate his crab but said he didn’t taste anything mind blowing, it was all batter. But if I can put his comment in an emoji, it would look like this 😐. Meaning it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. I on the other hand didn’t care for their comments because…I LOVED IT!!!!! Susi our server asked us if we wanted my son’s leftover noodles for take away and my husband said “No!” but until now I’m kicking myself for not saying “YES!“
So all in all it was a good Friday lunch, we tried something new and our tummies are bigger and better for it.
😋😋😋 3 yummy face out of 5.
Intro: Weeks before I had to get out of the house at night to help out a friend. This made me very nervous because it was the first time I left the boys on their own(FYI boys including their father). I’ve left them a couple of hours before but never at night and never until bed time. When I got back, the house was still standing and the boys were all tucked in which gave me the inspiration that maybe I can have a mommy night out. Ever my no. 1 supporter my husband agreed to take the kids one night and me and my friend M planned a nice dinner out.
We had our eyes, heart and tummies set at Din Tai Fung. They opened at the Mall of the Emirates around September of 2015 and as expected there was always a line and although it is a Michelin star restaurant, it is not fine dinning which means bringing the boys (which are 1/2 monkeys) would’ve been possible. But because of the line, I’m afraid that the waiting would trigger tantrums from all three of my boys.
My friend M on the other hand has picky eaters, husband and son. Which means trying anything new is her personal nightmare – that’s why they don’t.
So for our first mommy night out we chose Din Tai Fung. We were both so happy to get out of the house that I think we ordered the whole menu. The table was so small that our food barely fit on it.
Here’s what we tried:
Of course we had to order some Seafood Xiaolong Bao since that is what they are known for.
Ja Jian Noodles in minced Chicken sauce. I don’t think Ive ever had these type of noodles before but it was surely yummy.
Hong Kong style Roast Duck, these came with the usual pancake and cucumber plus plum sauce yummy but really nothing to write home about.
Shrimp Fried Rice, I love fried rice so this was a no brainer.
I’m not a food critic but to be honest I didn’t know what was the fuss about…I can’t say I’ve eaten at better Chinese restaurants before because to be honest they all taste the same to me…sorry.
My first Michelin restaurant and I can’t say it blew my socks off.

My first post back and you just have to know it’s got to be about my favourite topic, FOOD (specifically breakfast). Also since I missed so much, I’m going through my memory bank from the latest experience and going back from there.
Bystro Cafe is along Sheikh Zayed road and I pass by it every single day when I drop off big A to school. It first caught my eye when I stumbled upon their instagram account (@bystrodubai) and I’ve followed them ever since. I’ve been such a big fan that it’s almost embarrassing that it took me this long to go and actually try them.
As expected the ambiance was perfect for me and my 3-year-old. I was surprised that the day we came in there were more office type people dining and not mother and kids combo but then I quickly realised that it was summer and most families were probably away for holiday.
But my timing couldn’t be any better, for this summer they are having a 50% off your bill promo. Of course it’s not that easy, you must order a coffee, any fresh juice and any item from their breakfast menu then you get the 50% off. I don’t know about you but I’m a real sucker for any % off my food bill. Fine print is it’s only valid from Sundays to Wednesday and from 8am to 11am and it’s valid until the end of August (not sure about the date, but why wait until then, right?). Which for me was absolutely perfect.
I ordered the French toast with banoffee sauce with caramelized walnuts and of course coffee for me and fresh juice for the little one, which was enough for us to get the 50% deal. (I can’t stress to you how happy I am to get this deal). To try to describe my meal would be worthless because there are simply no words. I’d like to especially mention the servers that they were amazing, they were friendly but not too intrusive which is exactly how I like to interact with people most of the time.
Another piece of good news is that they are also included in the infamous Entertainer App so there is absolutely no excuse for you not to go right?
*all pictures were “borrowed” from @bystrodubai instagram account (you think they’d mind?😉)
If you’ve been here and loved it as much as I did, don’t forget to vote for them for What’s on Best Cafe category. I put the link down below for you x
I have a new addiction and I’m not afraid to share it.
I AM OBSESSING OVER YAMANOTE: Atelier. No it’s not the latest trend or handbag from Japan, it’s actually a bakery shop found at Al Wasl Square. Were you really surprised that it’s another food post? Of course it’s about food! You know you are reading my blog right??
I can’t begin to describe how good their breads are 😍 I don’t even know how… all I can say is that it’s light, soft, airy, YUMMY!!!! It’s nothing like I’ve ever tasted ever before!!! I’ve never baked bread before and now that I’ve discovered YAMANOTE I NEVER will!! They are simply the best Ahhhhhh I’m craving one just thinking about it now!
There are about 5 tables at the shop and they usually are full with loyal patrons, some even Japanese so what does that say? Isn’t it a good sign when a Japanese Bakery shop is actually full of Japanese people??? I, sadly have not had the opportunity to sit down since they are always full plus I like to go before I do the afternoon pick up so I can eat it in the car while I wait for the guards to open the school gates. Enough of me trying to tell you how good this place is and just let the pictures speak for itself.
*All pictures are grabbed from their website. Since the place is too small I feel weird taking pictures of the place – sorry!
With the temperatures slowly dropping and the sun shinning all day how can one not do anything outdoors. Of course first on our list was to spend some time at the beach. PSYCHED!!! Of course not! First on our list was to #findsalt and try their most talked about burgers! The beach was an after thought.
SALT, is a burger joint that serves their food out of a food truck and since they move a lot there’s a trending #findsalt on instagram and once found #foundsalt was the cool thing to do. I think the excitement of finding them and being in on the loop was part of the novelty for me. The Angus burgers were good but I liked the buns the most.
Lately they seemed to be rooted at Kite beach along Jumeirah Beach Road, which is actually perfect for me because I pass by them everyday on my school runs. Only bummer is they don’t serve anything but burgers, drinks and fries (but on the day that I was there they didn’t have any fries😩)and my boys DON’T eat burgers – Please don’t ask me how a couple who dedicated their lives in finding the “best” burger in Dubai can have two sons who DON’T EAT BURGERS.
Anyway, if you find yourself in the area drop by and you’ll be amazed at the diversity of people eating there. Only in Dubai can you find European or American women with their supermodel bodies wearing bikinis all day dine side by side with Emarati women wearing their abayas all in black and covered from head to toe and then there’s me, the disgruntled mom running around after her boys👬.
I guess you can say that’s how good their burgers are that people from all walks of life flock to wherever they are, so what are you doing sitting there…head on to Kite Beach and maybe I’ll see you there! hehe
I’ve meant to try this restaurant ever since it opened but because it’s a more pricey place (and I didn’t have a coupon for it, which means we would be paying full price) we were saving it for a special occasion. For this year our wedding anniversary fell during Ramadan so all restaurants open late and because we have kids, dinner is usually at 5:30PM. I was ready to throw in the towel and just make dinner for us (probably some sinigang to make my boys happy) But Arnie suggested we eat at Jamie Oliver’s restaurant. Eager to go and will do anything to do so, I suggested that I will cook an early dinner for the boys and feed them before leaving the house so that they don’t have to wait for Iftar and risk being cranky and moody and ruin the evening.
Luckily Jamie’s Italian at Jumeirah Beach Hotel is open from 12:00 noon to 11:00PM so as soon as I found out I made reservations for 5:30PM (yey! no need to cook!). Aside from us there was another family eating at 5:30 (also with two kids below 5 years old). Other than that the place was empty which was nice because my boys can roam around and I wouldn’t have to worry about them bothering other guests.
The place was not to pretentious (as I thought it would be) it was actually kind of casual, but casual with a hefty price tag hehe.
Upon sitting down at our booth, they provided us with 2 View-Master toy, one for the boys, I thought it was for their entertainment it turns out you can view the kids menu on them. What a cool idea! Especially at this age of iPads and others it was nice to see some toys from my day.
After ordering, free Bread was brought to our table which to be honest, I’ve had better. (sorry!) Aden did like the bread sticks but that was about it.
I had the Wild mushroom and smoked mozzarella Risotto, which I was told was an appetizer portion but it looked fine to me, besides I couldn’t hardly finish my plate any more of it and I would’ve just asked them to put it in a doggy bag.
Arnie had the Fish of the day, which was a lot of yadda yadda for fried fish with crispy skin on a bed of lentils topped with some sauce. He did comment that it was good but nothing that we will come back for.
Adrian ordered the spaghetti Bolognese from the kids menu. Yes you heard me right HE ordered himself and even engaged the waitress to some friendly banter. It still amazes me to see how much he has grown into a sociable kid when both his parents are not.
He was promised a surprise at the end of the meal if he finished his greens. Of course being Adrian he was bargaining with me that he will only finish his spaghetti and he will still get his price. Honestly, I wasn’t in the mood to argue so I just said YES.
This was his promised surprise at the end of our meal and as the receptionist was pinning it on his shirt he asked her if his brother Aden can have one too. (so nice to see that he’s always looking out for his little brother)
At the front part of the restaurant you can buy some Jamie Oliver cookbooks and other italian supplies one might need to make this food at home.
After dinner I was craving for some dessert to remove the after taste from the wild mushrooms and mozzarella. They did have some tempting sweets on the menu but the boys were already feeling too comfortable at the restaurant that they were making such a ruckus that I thought it was time to go. We decided to just pass by Marble Slab on the way home.
Seven year anniversary gifts are traditionally said to be wool or copper but a decent meal where I can sit down through the whole time without me having to run after one of my boys is good enough for me.
Cheers to us for seven years and more blissful years to come. 💏
Yesterday, we had to meet the husband after work so we had to kill time between school pick up and the husband’s time off work. Not willing to go home because this was a perfect excuse to go out! 😉. We found ourselves at Fat burger. I had Aden’s party here last year so I know the free play area will be perfect for our time to kill. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they’ve revamped the menu! Their old menu consists of burgers and fries, which wasn’t bad but now they offer Buffalo’s chicken wings which upon “extensive” (Google) research I found out that it’s a franchise from the US.
Aside from the wings, the Buffalo’s menu (I think they are still in the process of consolidating the two menus) also had some wraps, not being able to say no to a good-looking wrap, I tried the Sidewinder wrap. Which later I discovered was basically just crushed burger in a wrap. It was ok but not WOW! Maybe I should’ve tried the wings, you think? The table before me got all kinds of wings and although it looked messy they seemed to be enjoying it. Good excuse to bring the husband back next time 👍 .
They also have an ice cream parlour type menu on the side which made me think, Where were they when I was living in Jumeirah and only walking distance away??? Would’ve been a nice place to have desserts on a hot summer night.
Anyway, life goes on and things change and it seems like Fat burger does too! I’m happy they made the changes, I just hope they take better care of that play area. A year after and it looks a bit torn up with holes on the nets and broken parts.
Oh and if you were in any way concerned, we were able to kill an hour and a half at the place without a hitch. Keep in mind that our usual meal time is 15-20 mins tops before they get bored and ask to go. This time the boys were busy playing, they did eat their food in the car since they were too busy but I didn’t mind this at all because I had the table to myself and enabled me to start writing this post!!!
I hope your weekend is going great so far!!
