I had a very eventful weekend and I’m very excited to share it to anyone who will give me the time 😜. Well before you get too excited I must tell you it’s a very “domestic” type of adventure. Being a mother of two that’s about all the type of adventure you can expect from me (not complaining 😉).
We were invited at our friend’s house in Ajman for the weekend for some get together and to go second hand store shopping at Bu Faisal. I wrote about Bu Faisal before – click on link if you need to be reminded haha. Ramadan tends to be a good time to go to second hand shops because it’s this time of the year that some of our wealthy muslim brothers change most or all of their furniture which means second hand stores like Bu Faisal gets all the goods they sell, throw or give away. Which makes Bu Faisal the destination for thrifty bargain hunters like
The store opens at 5PM and closes at 11PM so our host thought it was best if we all slept over to maximise our shopping expedition. Of course the boys were not informed that they were going to be daddy nannies the whole night which led to a very vocal protest as soon as we got home but it fell on deaf ears for we were all on a shopping high.
Prior to the event, I thought our house was good the way it is now so I was under the impression that I was just joining them to look around and not buy anything, with that being said, our car (with a very large boot mind you) was full of stuff I got from Bu Faisal on the way home to Dubai from Ajman. I told you I didn’t need anything! haha
Without further adieu I share with you my precious cheap finds.
- Shelves organiser from ikea at only 10aed each (I got 3)
- Shoe rack also from ikea @ 35aed
- Fortune Plant @ 40aed
- Kids chairs @10aed each
- Frames @ 20aed each
- Brand new Coffee maker @40aed
- Ikea poster with frame @40aed
- Vanity Mirror @ 8aed
- glasses @ 3aed each
- Butter dish @ 8aed
Phew! I think that was the most shopping I did ever in my life and I only spent less than 300aed now that’s a whole lotta savings!
If I sound like a walking advert, it’s because I am! (an unpaid one at that hehe) I’m just really happy and excited about my finds and savings. Now as I look at my home, I feel like it needs a million things, which means a trip back to Bu is inevitable!
P.S. Special thanks to Tita S for bargaining for me and to Tita LM for opening their home to us city folks! Until our next shopping expedition ladies!
Aside from our Tagalog movie marathon and non stop eating in Ajman last friday the women of Ajman brought us Dubai girls to a “secret” place in Ajman that sells used furniture. Bu Faisal is not really a secret, I’m sure the super super thrifty have heard of this place in Ajman to buy used furniture. I’ve heard of it because we have friends who live there, one even had her two bedroom flat fully furnished by Bu Faisal. I was happy to be able to go sans naughty boys special thanks to Kuya V, Ate C and Ate M for watching over my boys while mommy was away shopping hehe .
WARNING: not a place for kids, there were broken glass everywhere and the stairs were not so sturdy so BEWARE.
Imagine a warehouse full of a variety of used items for sale. It was like a candy store to DIY(ers). I wish I could start a project but space and resources are all not to my advantage. There is a couple of wing chairs I had my eye on that simply needed a upholstery and it would have been a fabulous (naks!) I do have to give kudos to the men who run the place because it was well sorted out. There was a place for electronics, furniture, appliances, clothes etc etc. Ikea furniture was all over the place (but don’t tell my husband or else he will never let me buy anything from the Sweden store ever again!!! – my life will be over – drama!!!).
I’m currently obsessing on dinnerware so that was my section of interest. I was overwhelmed with my choices and as always couldn’t decide and didn’t get much. I did see some nice wine glasses but I could just imagine my boys breaking them and me ending in tears so – never mind. a friend;y advice you do need to get your hands dirty and dig in there my friend got some Corelle plates as a set hiding somewhere under all the dishes – she was very lucky and very happy because they only priced her items at 20 aed. As for me, I just bought a CorningWare serving dish and a glass candy bowl from Poland, that I just thought was nice meh meh!
I am excited though to be invited again to Mr. and Mrs. M’s place because maybe the girls and I can sneak out again and visit my new best friend Bu. 😉

Our weekend started out with an impromptu invitation for dinner to Ajman with friends from work. Our gracious host, Mr. and Mrs. M is an older couple than most of us that it feels like they are our older brother and sister. Their family has always opened up their home to all of us that coming over for dinner feels like coming to my lolo’s house for sunday lunch.
They are renting out a 5 bedroom villa out there for the same price as a 3 bedroom flat here in Dubai. But because they are a bigger family the 5 bedroom fits them perfectly. They even have a music/theater/entertainment room upstairs that houses all of Mr. M’s musical instruments and gadgets.
The kids were busy playing by themselves that they were in their own little world (my two boys included 😉), the bigger boys were engrossed on their conversations outside by the lanai and the women and I were relaxing at the dining room watching tagalog movies back to back to back and eating whatever Mrs. M serves in front of us 🐷. The dinner was so much fun we decided to stay the night at their place and stay until late afternoon the next day.
It felt like food was just coming out of the kitchen every hour I was already feeling sorry for Dara who had to was all the dishes again and again and again. But aside from this you know that this was my kind of weekend.
On the drive home it gave me a little time to be grateful to have friends from DW that also feels like family. In this place where sometimes it feels like it’s just the four of us, it’s nice to be invited for dinner just because they want to reconnect and see each other. We truly had a nice weekend at the M’s even if not one of us took showers and changed clothes for 24 hours.
Mental note: next dinner at Ajman, I'm going to be packing the boys and myself an overnight bag.
